How To Build A Sound Design Portfolio

Adam Scott

Are you trying to become a sound designer? It is important to build a good portfolio of work.

This way your clients know exactly what your abilities are. And they can begin working with you in a mutually beneficial way.

What does a sound design portfolio include?

A sound design portfolio needs to contain a variety of your audio work. The work does not have to be video.

It can be television or web series. Or in video games.

You could also include promotional work and even solo projects. Whatever type of work you produce or have produced.

Make sure you have variety in your design portfolio. By creating a sound design portfolio, you can attract more clients.

Here are some ideas:

  • Commercials
  • Promotional work
  • Editing or voice over work
  • Personal projects
  • Video game work
  • Sound Effects work
  • Audio tutorials and guides
  • Guitar tutorials and guides

You can also have a unique sound design portfolio. You could build your own sounds and loops.

Or have a signature sound. You could also create a sound design loop to share with the world.

For example, a bass loop or a synth sound. Or you can create a sound design based around how the world works.

Like how the earth creates sound.

When you set up your site you should have your logo. That’s a must.

You could even have an audio on your website. For example, a warble, the movement of an animal, or your tone.

You could even make a loop. A specific sound or a sound based on a specific thing.

In the same way, when you upload sound files you could include a sound file to make the experience really good. A version of the sound that includes the movement or action of the animal.

Or in this case a sound file that has your original word or phrase spoken. Something that makes the experience truly unique.

Remember, it’s not just about what you sound like. It’s about what your sounds add to a game.

The world of sound design

Sound design is everywhere. Whether you’re creating sounds for movies, advertising, television or games.

Sound design helps create that immersive and unique feeling. A sense of presence.

It’s something that will set you apart from your competition.

Consider the following:

  • Are you really hearing what’s going on around you?
  • Is the sound enhancing the experience for the players?
  • Do your sounds help to immerse the player in the game?
  • Is the sound too loud or too soft?

All of these are examples of design choices. Sound design is not just about the sound.

It’s about the overall experience. How you use the sound to make a player feel a certain way.

The work needs to be immersive and truly different.

Get an internshipman playing white and red electric guitar

This is a common piece of advice you will hear, but it is one of the most important. A good internship shows you are a serious candidate and can offer solid references.

Working an unpaid internship is probably the best way to break into the field.

If you don’t have an internship or will have to fund your tuition by yourself, check out Borrow My Internship. If you have a talent for video game music, check out the course Game Audio with Tubescreamer.

Learn to draw

Drawing is a very underrated skill in the video game industry. It is easy to imagine the scenarios you would like to see in the game, but a lot of the art you create in a videogame comes after you’ve finished it, and it needs to look awesome for the final product.

Learning to draw will help you create more compelling visual experiences, which will ultimately translate into the game’s final quality. If you’re not sure how to start, check out Drew Graff’s Master Class on Drawing in game development.

Make your own sodrund effects

Perhaps you are developing a game about a strange alien life-form. You might use a computer to build your own synthesizer and build a unique sound.

You could even try making the sounds with your mouth. If you want to try making sound effects for a first time, consider applying for the 60-Second Tech Challenge.

The video game industry is full of creativity and creativity needs to be rewarded.

Get publishedblack power strip and audio mixer

Once you have finished your sound effects, you will have a portfolio that you can work with. The next step is to get your content published.

There are a few free places you can send your work to. One is Livestream.com.

Just add your video game project, upload your sound effect, and then share it for feedback.

You could also submit your project to Game Grumps. In my experience, I think the Game Grumps site tends to take a more open approach to submissions.

You can also submit to Destructoid for Game Grumps, PocketGamer for CodedKC, Game Zone for GameGrumps, Slice of Video Games for RockPaperShotgun, and Digital Photography Review for Game Grumps.

I’ve also heard that if you are able to get your game on DICE2013, such as Unsung Story, then you should contact them directly. They tend to take a bit of a “breath of fresh air” approach to submissions, and they will be more accepting of submissions that are unique or have a unique theme.
